I’ve been donating power reds for years. I was excited to donate platelets for the first time. I took a day off from work with no pay. Drove almost one hour to Akron, only to be told that because I had scratches on my arm, which I got from working on my car, that I couldn’t donate. I was crushed. They just looked at me and said nope, walked away….. almost as if I had the plague. I will not be back. My first impression of the Akron office was like having to listen to Dr Fauci all over again. Soooooo disappointing.

I’ve been a universal blood donor regularly for several years. Some at this location and other times at nearby blood drives. Today I was very happy with Lisa H. Her professionalism and care was evident from start to finish so much that I decided to schedule a future donation when eligible which I usually don’t. Thanks for the job well done.

I’m a long-time, regular donor (46 gallons donated so far), but I’ve just moved to Akron and probably won’t be back to this center. Set an appointment this morning and went over this afternoon. I was told by the front desk that they printed their list of appointments last night, so they would not be able to take me. To clarify, I had an appointment, they had space in their schedule, but since the front desk printed the appointment list last night and my appointment was made after, they refused to see me. I’d somewhat understand if they just didn’t take same-day appointments, but clearly they offer this online. Considering how there is currently an urgent need for blood, this is poorly mismanaged. Not sure I’d give up valuable personal time and drive there again if this is how they treat their donors.

The Redcross absolutely rocks! I recently started volunteering over the summer and I love every part of it. They’re really helpful in terms of helping you get started and working with your schedule. Obviously, the best part of working at the Redcross is helping to save lives. Everyone who I’ve interacted with really loves their job and they’re so friendly and great. And not that this is important BUT they are know for having great snacks for volunteers and donors. So if you were maybe weary about volunteering or donating, please don’t be. They’re all awesome!

Donate today, people need you! It’s rewarding, meaningful, and enjoyable for me to donate platelets, something that I’ve done for many years. The American Red Cross Summit County Chapter is the forth location in the US at which I have donated platelets. For many years I donated platelets at The Blood Connection in Greenville, SC, and then I donated at two locations in and near Seattle, Washington. My review of this Red Cross location is given based on my first donation here this past Saturday at 7:15am and in comparison to my experience at The Blood Connection and donation centers in Seattle.
