I had an appointment scheduled for 1pm today. Because of of a medical appointment relating to my wife’s recent surgery, I went in 1/2 hour early to check on the possibility of getting in earlier. I was told no. I asked to reschedule and the front desk at the Helena Red Cross Center said she could not do that. I needed to do myself. I find this odd given that at my last donation, staff at the Helena Red Cross Center set my next donation appointment as they always have in the past. For an organization that begs for donors, a person would think customer service would be a bit more helpful.

Nothing is more important than donating blood if you are healthy and able to do so. I like to stop here at the donor center for my every 56 day checkup. Staff is friendly and do a good job of making the experience as painless as possible. I might have set a record for my fastest donation time every! The lady who took my blood was a total pro, the needle stick didn’t even hurt. Can’t want for my next visit.

I’ve had nothing but bad experiences with American Red Cross blood donations. I am certified in First Aid, CPR, and Lifeguarding for the professional rescuer through American Red Cross and loved their classes. Previously, I’ve always donated blood through United Blood Services and always had a great experience. Since moving away to college, there is no UBS in Helena and ARC comes to Carroll College about every three months. Today was the second time I attempted to donate blood through them. The first, I was deferred due to not weighing enough (I know that’s not there fault.) Today, I tried again. They have blood drives on campus knowing that we are busy college students. I set aside plenty of time on one of my busiest days to donate blood for them, and all they did was waste my time. I had filled out my rapid pass prior to my appointment. I waited 20 minutes for them to bring me back to the questionnaire spot, which wasn’t bad. Then they proceeded to leave me in that area without assistance for a complete hour, checking periodically and saying “I’ll be right back” but never returning. They also had time to mess with the music/speaker while I was still waiting. I witnessed two 2 people that came in to the blood drive after me, leave before they even finished my questioning. I am a college student with a busy life and just wanted to donate blood but they wasted my time, I left after over an hour of waiting, before they even came back to finish my questionnaire.

I see why people don’t donate blood, it’s a horrible experience. I don’t think these people are medically trained. They had the blood pressure cuff so tight on me I almost passed out from the pain and I couldn’t feel my fingers for the rest of the day. They completely wasted my husband’s donation because they didn’t put the needle in properly and it came out and sprayed blood every where. Never again.

Just moved back from Seattle and they’re just as good at it as the massive Bloodworks Northwest operations in the Puget Sound area.
