They provide a vital service to our community and unfortunately, because of the Pandemic, blood donations are way down! Blood is one of those things that is easy to donate, not painful, maybe a little time consuming, depending on your anatomy it may take approximately two hours! But, it’s also one of those resources that we don’t think about, until we have a personal need for it! Like many things, we take it for granted, and make the very mistaken assumption that if we need it, an accident or a surgery occurs (to us or a family member) it will always be there! This is sooo NOT true! Shortages occur all the time and they can only be prevented by our vigilant donations!

Completely incompetent! Having made over forty whole blood donations, over the course of the past twenty years, this was by the far the worst experience I’ve ever encountered. I arrived for my 12:30 appointment at 12:25. I then waited until 12:45 when I was greeted by “John G.” who led me into an office for the initial interview, BP, pulse rate, etc. (I had already completed the online questionnaire, so a simple scan from my phone satisfied that requirement.) I was then escorted to one of the donation chairs, where I waited another fifteen minutes, until “John G.” came over and stated “We’re just waiting for a computer to get you started on your donation”. He then placed a cuff on my arm to check the viability of my veins, and said, “Oh boy, looks good. If I miss that one, it’s time for me to retire! (I’ve been told by nurses, doctors and techs that I have “very easy veins to deal with” throughout my life.) Another couple of minutes passed and “John G.” then went about setting up the apparatus (bags,etc.) for my donation. Another employee – who appeared to be a senior technician – inspected the setup and stated, “No, this is wrong! This is how it should be.” I remained silent. The same senior tech showed “John G.” something else (which I could not see) and said, “This is what you never want to do”. His response: ” I didn’t do that!” It was at this point where I asked him, “Have you done this before?” He said, “Yes, I have.” The senior tech chimed in and said, “Oh yes, he’s a nurse.” Then came the fun part, wherein three attempts were made, by “John G.” to get the needle in the right place. He could not. The senior tech came over, and said, “I’m ending it.” I got up and walked out, with a sore arm, shaking my head, having just wasted an hour of my time.
